I. The Word of God

(Many theories of inspiration: Best is "Verbal Inspiration," the very words of all Scripture are inspired; the writers knew they were responsible for words rather than just concepts.)

II. The Authority of Scripture: the Basis of Doctrine

  1. Jesus, the Word of God - John 14:6, 17:17, 18:37; Matt. 4:4
These verses combine to show that Jesus is the truth, He came to bring the truth which, now preserved in the written Word of God, is that by which man must live.

  2. Doctrine: based on Scripture - II Tim. 3:16

  3. Doctrine: the assembly's foundation of truth - I Tim. 3:15
(Note: "doctrine " and "sound doctrine" 16 times in I & II Timothy, Titus)

  4. Doctrine and the Servant of God - I Tim. 4:16

III. The Place of Teaching in the Assembly

  1. The Teachers

(Note that the church never teaches but as the bride receives instruction. Ministry comes from the Head to the body by means of God's chosen vessels or servants. Eph. 5:24; Rev. 2:20)

  2. The Hearers - I Peter 2:2; Luke 8:18; James 1:22-25; Rev. 2:29

  3. The Meeting - Acts 2:42 the practice of the Early Church

Review of three missionary journeys in Acts:

  4. The Results
